Questions and answers

Key information about the website, your Garmin watch and live splits.

What is RivalSplit?

RivalSplit shows the time gap between a reference athlete and selected rivals at the same timing checkpoints. You can follow fixed rivals, the leader and the nearest athlete ahead and behind.

How does the watch receive information?

Choose the event and athletes on the website, then send the setup to a connected Garmin watch. The data field on the watch retrieves the setup and new checkpoint times from RivalSplit.

Do I need mobile coverage?

Yes. The watch needs internet access for ongoing updates. This will normally be provided through Garmin Connect on a phone connected to the watch by Bluetooth. If coverage is lost, the last received information remains visible and new data can be retrieved when the connection returns.

Do I need to carry my phone during the event?

We recommend it. Some watches can use Wi-Fi in certain situations, but continuous updates on the course should rely on a connected phone with mobile coverage.

How does the phone connect to the website?

There is no separate RivalSplit phone app. Use the website in your mobile browser. Garmin Connect provides the connection between the phone and watch, while the RivalSplit data field on the watch communicates with RivalSplit.

How do I connect my Garmin watch to my account?

Open the RivalSplit data field on the watch to receive a six-character code. Sign in to the website, open Settings and Watches, and enter the code. The code expires quickly and can only be used once.

Does RivalSplit use my GPS position?

No. Time gaps are calculated from times registered by the timing provider. Athletes are compared when they have been recorded at the same checkpoint.

How quickly does a new checkpoint appear on the watch?

This depends on when the timing provider publishes the checkpoint, the phone connection and the watch's next update. A short delay is therefore normal.

What happens if a rival has not passed the checkpoint?

The athlete is placed at the bottom or shown without a time until a valid checkpoint is received. RivalSplit never compares a later checkpoint with the reference athlete's earlier checkpoint.

Can the same person appear more than once?

No. If a fixed rival is also the leader or the nearest athlete ahead or behind, the roles are combined and the person appears once.

Can I follow athletes in different distances?

Only when the event has a confirmed shared checkpoint. Otherwise the distances may use different routes or timing points and cannot be compared reliably.

What is Mobile live view?

It is a bright, easy-to-read result view for people following the event on a phone beside the course. The reference athlete is clearly highlighted and you can switch between available checkpoints.

Why can't I find an event?

The event must be available through a timing provider supported by RivalSplit. During beta, availability may be limited and the start list may be published closer to the event date.

How do I request beta access?

Choose ‘Request beta access’ on the home page or sign-in page. Provide the Google address you want to use. Once the request is approved, you can sign in with the same address.

How do I submit feedback?

Sign in, open Settings and choose ‘Send feedback’. The feedback is linked to your account so it can be understood and followed up.

Can RivalSplit show incorrect information?

Yes. The view depends on information from the timing provider, the network connection and a correct setup. RivalSplit is an aid and does not replace the organiser's official results.
